Ariane 6 launched the Meteosat Third Generation–Imager 2 (MTG-I2) weather satellite from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on 27 August 2026 at 22:11 CEST (20:11 UTC), or 17:10 local time (20:10 UTC). The mission was Ariane 6's ninth flight overall, its fourth of 2026, and its first to geostationary transfer orbit — a significant expansion of the launcher's demonstrated mission envelope. NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is poised to launch on Aug. 30, 2026, on a mission to investigate some of the deepest mysteries in astrophysics. The observatory will tackle dark energy — the enigmatic force driving the accelerating expansion of the universe — as well as dark matter, exoplanet detection, and a broad range of other astrophysical phenomena. The final two satellites of ESA's pioneering Cluster mission — nicknamed Samba and Tango — are set to perform targeted reentries into Earth's atmosphere on 31 August and 1 September respectively. The controlled disposals mark the conclusion of a mission that revolutionised understanding of Earth's magnetic environment and the solar wind's interaction with it. Scientists plan to observe the breakup from an aircraft, turning the reentries into a rare opportunity to study how spacecraft fragment and burn up — data valuable for improving space-debris mitigation models.
Shenzhou-23 crew members Zhu Yangzhu and Zhang Zhiyuan conducted the mission's first extravehicular activity (EVA) outside China's Tiangong space station to perform maintenance ensuring a stable power supply for ongoing experiments aboard the orbital complex. Separately, a gravity experiment using free-falling rubidium atoms aboard Tiangong has confirmed that the atoms fell with identical acceleration, upholding the equivalence principle — a cornerstone of Einstein's general theory of relativity — in a new high-precision test conducted in microgravity.
